Hot Dog

Hot dog grilling recipe? Yeah, it’s an easy one, but what grilling recipe website would be complete without giving homage to the classic, simple hot dog. This week, a guest writer chimes in and provides a recipe for hot dogs, a great food for Memorial Day, July 4th or any summer grilling occasion.

Let’s start with an all-American (and a little German) favorite, the hot dog! Around 1870, on Coney island, a German immigrant named Charles Feltman began selling sausages in rolls1 which has become the standard food in ballparks around the country. Rarely do we see a food with such a wide acceptance, and you can find them anywhere, including the corner on a city street!

I am going to teach you how to prepare this miraculous food with great results and show you a few tricks to make this dog not only really attractive (you is soooo hot)…. but also darn tasty!

This most important consideration for this is the type of dog you will use. At the store there seems to be a sea of these basking in the fluorescent sun of the grocery waiting to be plucked out and enjoyed….but wait!!! For the best taste you will only want to purchase ones with the “circle U” emblem. This indicates that it is kosher, and also lets you know that there are some verrrry specific standards that it must meet, which means one thing to us……a great dog!!

Ingredients:
Kosher hot dogs
buns (yours at the grill, and some for the dogs.)

Cook method: Direct high heat.

All you have too do to make the perfect dog is to steam it prior to slapping it on the grill. You may have noticed that when you grill a bunch of dogs on the 4th, they tend to have the texture of a saddlebag. Grilling naturally makes these things shrivel up and look like an 85 year old native Floridian. The one way to avoid this is to bring in extra moisture to ensure that this does not happen. The steaming process does this for us and will give you great looking (and tasting) dogs.

Once you have steamed them for about 5-7 minutes, take them out and slap them on the grill and cook, turning them to get all the sides evenly cooked, about 1 to 2 minutes per side. If you are preparing these for a number of people, just use a shallow pan to hold the steamed dogs until it is their turn. Place the buns on the grill for a few moments to crisp up the inside an you are good to go!! People will ask you how you did it!

Dress em like you want em!!

Go for it with whatever you like!! Recommend toppings to include for your dog:

  • ketchup
  • mustard (both yellow and spicy)
  • chopped onions
  • kraut
  • relish (sweet or dill)
  • celery salt
  • jalapeno peppers
  • Tabasco peppers
  • tomato slices
  • mayo

Wrap your buns around that!!!

It may sound simple, but I’ve always had the “saddle bag” dog, most likely because I’ve never known about steaming them. My question is, in your average kitchen, how do you steam a hot dog? Again, it may sound like I’m missing something here, it’s because I am. As a new grill technician, I’m learnng everything I can so my summers are long and yummy.
I’ve enjoyed your site for all kinds of other grilled foods. So far my favorite is the pork chops (mouth watering at the though).

Cheers.

I use a steamer basket that is intended for veggies. Put it in a pot with just enough water to go up to the bottom of the basket.
